WHAT IS CRANIOPATHY?
Craniopathy is a gentle, non-invasive technique addressing the skull and the restoration of proper nervous system function. It is an advanced form of Sacro Occipital Technique (S.O.T.) developed by Major Bertrand DeJarnette, a chiropractor and osteopath. Craniopathy focuses on the position of the 22 interconnected bones in the skull and its function. Cranial adjustments can be used to prevent, treat and as part of a wholistic approach to health care.

Craniopathy can help alleviate many conditions, including but not limited to:
- Migraines
- Cranial/dental issues
- Orthodontic issues
- Sinus headaches
- Teeth grinding
- TMJ pain/clicking
- Facial pain
- Ear infections and tinnitus
- Vertigo
- Head injuries
- Concussion complications
- Tongue and lip ties
- Speech problems
- Eye pain/pressure
- Hypertension/hypotension
- Emotional trauma
- “Flat head syndrome” (Plagiocephaly)
- Sleep disturbances
- Hormone imbalances
- Insomnia
- Loss of memory/brain fog

CAN CRANIOPATHY HELP BABIES AND CHILDREN?
Craniopathy can be beneficial to treat babies and young children with gentle manipulation to repair the misalignments in the delicate plates in the skull that can cause discomfort and pain. The birth process is the most common cause of these misalignments, even if it was a birth without complications.

These misalignments often do not self-correct and can even have an impact on the growth and development of the face and skull. The good news with babies and young children is that they are still in the developmental stage. The earlier the problem is diagnosed and treated, the better the results!

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CRANIAL ADJUSTMENT?
Cranial adjustments require assessing the sutures (moveable joints) in the skull, as well as the dura (membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord). An SOT system of analysis is used to determine the misalignment in the skull and gentle pressure is applied to one of the cranial bones, during which the patient is directed to breath is a specific pattern.

Dr. Shalom Samuel grew up in Chennai, India and moved to the United States with her Family at the age of 12. After graduating from West Bend high school in Wisconsin, she entered the Pre-Med program at UW-Parkside and had the goal of going to medical school to become a Dermatologist. During her junior year of college, she was awarded an exceptional scholarship to go study abroad in Australia at Macquarie University for a semester. Upon successful completion, she continued her studies & graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S). During her time at Parkside, Dr. Shalom was actively engaged in church activities, mission trips to Mexico and India, had leadership roles in various clubs and organizations including the Pre-Med and Biology clubs.

Dr. Shalom first learned about chiropractic through Dr. Don Daniels, whose family she stayed with while finishing her last year at UW-Parkside. She shadowed Dr. Daniels at Daniels chiropractic office in Racine,WI and began to realize that the body has the power to heal itself and that the nervous system flows through the spine, which controls every single part of the body.

Dr. Shalom, therefore decided to go to chiropractic school rather than medical school. She graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa in 2012. During her time at Palmer, Dr. Shalom provided chiropractic care to the less fortunate in the community outreach clinic. She also taught Radiology positioning, assisted clinicians with electronic health records and was the teaching assistant in the Diagnosis Department.

After graduation, Dr. Shalom decided to move from Wisconsin in order to pursue her dream job as a chiropractor. She practiced in Arizona and California for 2 1/2 years, and then decided to move closer to family. She is trained in the Diversified technique, Thompson drop, Activator, Flexion- Distraction and Logan basic. Dr. Shalom also uses trigger point therapy and other physical modalities to help muscles relax before and after the treatment.

Dr. Shalom has also received certification in nutrition and the Webster technique. The Webster technique is a method of analysis and adjustment for woman during pregnancy to ensure proper nervous system function and pelvic alignment allowing the baby to be in the best possible position for birth.

Dr. Shalom recently pursued advanced training in tethered oral tissue (TOTS) and craniopathy- an advanced Sacro-occipital technique developed by Major Bertrand DeJarnette, a chiropractor and osteopath who studied with Cranial Osteopath Dr. William G. Sutherland. Dr. Shalom now uses this technique to access the cranial bones and adjust the misalignments in the skull, to improve the function of the central nervous system and its surroundings.

Dr. Shalom has a passion to care for the whole family, so that health can be expressed at its full potential from conception and beyond. The mission of Shalom Family Chiropractic is to transform the health of our communities, one family at a time!

Dr. Shalom is happily married to Nelson Vijayakumar and they have two beautiful daughters, Addie and Emma. They reside in Sun Prairie and love spending time outdoors and taking trips around Wisconsin. They are excited to start a new family affair, Shalom Family Chiropractic.
